The skills challenge is conducted every year on the eve of the National Championship. The goal is to give players another opportunity to get to know each other a little better. 4 Teams of 20 players combine from each of the 8 National Championship teams.
Each team will have 4 minutes to compete at this station. Team members get 1 shot and must rotate out to the next player with no limit on how many turns within allotted time. Points awarded every time a player successfully clears an obstruction.
Clearing the 6’ Obstruction - 5 pts,
Clearing the 8’ Obstructions - 10 pts,
Each player will attempt a long drive and must rotate out to the next player with no limit on how many turns within allotted time. Ball should stay between the inside edges of the banners defining the skills challenge fairway to be awarded pts. Points awarded as defined below.
275+yds = 6 pts
260+yds = 5 pts
240+yds = 4 pts
220+yds = 3 pts
200+yds = 2 pt
150+yds = 1 pt
Each player will attempt to sink a 60ft+ putt and must rotate out to the next player with no limit on how many turns within allotted time. Points awarded the closer the putt gets to the hole.
Roll a putt into the outer ring - 2 pts
Roll a putt into the inner ring - 5 pts
Sink the putt - 10 pts
Team members get 1 shot and must rotate out to the next player with no limit on how many turns within allotted time. Points awarded based on a ball’s distance from the hole.
Hit the Green - 5pts
Ball rests within the outer ring - 10 pts
Hole in One - 100 pts
|1||4||350||Quill Creek - A creek runs along the right side of the fairway, crosses over and ends up guarding the left side of the green. Despite the creek, there is plenty of room on the right, but the best angle to the green is from the left side of the fairway. The ideal drive travels down the left side, catches the left-to-right slope and kicks a little to the right into the “A” position.|
|2||5||465||Sunset Grill - Big hitters can get home in two, but most golfers should plan on playing it as a three-shot hole. A low-lying grassy swale runs along the left side of the fairway and plunges to nearly 30 feet below and to the left of the putting surface.|
|3||5||441||Mountain Lion - As the name suggests, this hole is a beast. The tee shot plays uphill to the fairway which is guarded by a bunker on the left and desert on the right. The second shot is difficult as it is all carry to the green – large bunkers are located in the front and behind the green. The green is large and multi-leveled.|
|4||3||144||Burningbush - One of the more visually intimidating holes on the golf course, No. 13 is a long par three that plays uphill and features a deep greenside bunker to the right. Saving par from the bunker is considerably difficult, thus the prudent play favors the left side. Depending on the wind, an extra club is a good idea.|
|5||4||342||Serenity - Big hitters may consider playing a fairway wood from the tee; however, there is enough space for a well placed drive. A steep grade along the left side of the green funnels errant shots down to the green and a large trough bisects the green making it important place the ball on the correct side on the approach|
|6||4||305||High Point - Sweeping views in all directions take in a board swath from the nearby McDowell Mountains to the Valley of the Sun below. The hole plays downhill to a landing area sloped from right to left with a fairway bunker situated to the left. The green is large with two distinctive shelves short-left and back-right. A deep crease runs between them.|
|7||3||97||Wee One - While not a long hole, No. 16 requires accuracy. The green slopes from right to left with a steep fall off to a desert area on the left side. The green tends to be firm and fast.|
|8||4||301||Bagger Pass - Of the three holes that were recently redesigned, the 17th was altered the least. It was transformed from a long par 4 to drivable par 4. The putting surface is quite large with a steep transition from the top tier in the back to the lower portion in the front.|
|9||5||430||Big Sky - The finishing hole is a pleasure for the senses as it overlooks Scottsdale and greater Phoenix. The lay-up is no cinch either, as the landing area is fairly slim and sloped from left to right towards water.|
Play is governed by the 2016 Rules of Golf of the United States Golf Association, the Decisions on the Rules of Golf, and where applicable, by the following Local Rules, Conditions and Definitions. Appendix I refers to the Appendix of Local Rules; Conditions of the Competition in the 2016 USGA Rules of Golf booklet. The Committee refers to the PGA Junior League Golf Rules Committee.
The penalty for any rules violation in PGA Junior League Golf is one-stroke.
1) FORMAT: 2-Person Scramble Match Play
2) MATCH: Each Match is comprised of three Flags.
3) FLAG: The Stipulated Round for each Flag is 3 holes. All players must play of minimum of one Flag.
4) ORDER Of PLAY: The team listed first on the scoreboard/scorecard will have the Honor to start the Match. A team that wins the hole takes the Honor at the next teeing ground. Any rules violations must be reported to the official scorekeeper before play begins on the following hole.
NOTE: Players should not hole out (finish) before both members of the team have made their stroke. The first ball holed out determines that teams score (does not count a conceded putt).
5) CONCESSION OF NEXT STROKE: A Team may concede their opponent’s next stroke at anytime, provided the opponent’s ball is at rest. The opponent is considered to have holed out with his next stroke, and the ball may be removed by either Team. A concession may not be declined or withdrawn.
6) TRANSPORTATION: Players must NOT ride on any form of transportation during a Match unless authorized by the Committee. Pull carts are permitted.
7) CADDIE: A player is prohibited from using a caddie at anytime during the Match. NOTE: For safety reasons, on holes which the committee is providing/permitting player transportation a person (i.e. parent/spectator) may assist with the player’s transportation of his/her pull cart. Substitute’s bags should be transported on the captain or coach’s golf car.
8) ADVICE: During the Match any player may seek advice from their captain or coach between the play of two holes or substitute player assigned to that Match at any time. The captain and coach have been given a "PGA" wristband which must be displayed during the Game.
9) CLUBS: Each player is allowed to carry up to 14 clubs in their bag. Players on the same team, playing in the same Match are allowed to share each other’s clubs.
10) DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICES: A player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only.
11) STONES IN BUNKERS: Stones in Bunkers are Movable Obstructions.
12) WATER HAZARDS/LATERAL WATER HAZARDS: A team is PROHIBITED from playing their ball from any Water Hazard/Lateral Water Hazard. If it is known or virtually certain that a ball that is in the Water Hazard/Lateral Water Hazard or has not been found is in the Water Hazard/Lateral Water Hazard the team MUST, under penalty of one stroke, proceed under Rule 26-1. (Lateral Water Hazards)
13) OUT OF BOUNDS: Defined by the inside edge of white stakes and/or property fence posts at ground level. Out of Bounds will be played as a Lateral Water Hazard. Relief should be taken as prescribed in Rule 26-1. (Lateral Water Hazards)
14) LOST BALL: If a team’s ball becomes lost outside of a Lateral Water Hazard the team MUST play under stroke and distance, playing their ball from where the previous stroke was made.
15) LINE OF PUTT: The Line of Putt MUST NOT be touched EXCEPT:
(i)The team may remove loose impediments, provided they do not press anything down; (ii) the player may place the club in front of the ball when addressing it, provided he/she does not press anything down; (iii) in measuring; (iv) in lifting or replacing the ball; (v) in pressing down a ball-marker; (vi) in repairing old hole plugs or ball marks on the putting green; (vii) and in removing movable obstructions.
NOTE: Team members may stand behind a player on an extension of his/her line of play or line of putt, while the player is making a stroke.
16) MARK, LIFT, CLEAN & PLACE: If a team’s ball lies Through the Green the team must mark and lift the ball. The team must then place the ball on a spot within one-club length of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a hazard or on a putting green.
If a team’s ball lies in a Bunker the team must mark and lift the ball. The team must then place the ball on a spot within one-club length of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay and must be placed in the Bunker.
If a team’s ball lies on the Putting Green the team must mark and lift the ball. The team must then place the ball on a spot within one-putter head length of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a hazard.
A player may place the ball only once, and it is in play when it has been placed, both players MUST place their ball in the same direction. If the ball when placed comes to rest on the spot on which it is placed and it subsequently moves, there is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies.
If the player fails to mark the position of the ball before lifting it or moves the ball in any other manner, such as rolling it with a club, the team incurs a penalty of one stroke and the ball must be replaced.
17) SUSPENSION OF PLAY DUE TO A DANGEROUS SITUATION: When play is suspended for a dangerous situation, if the players in a group are between the play of two holes, they must not resume play until the PGA Rules Committee has ordered a resumption of play. If they are in the process of playing a hole, they must discontinue play immediately and must not resume play until the Committee has ordered a resumption of play.
NOTE 1: A suspension for a dangerous situation will be signaled by one prolonged siren or horn blast. All other types of suspension will be signaled by three intermittent siren or horn blasts. Resumption of play will be signaled by two intermittent siren or horn blasts.
NOTE 2: All practice areas will be closed during suspension for a dangerous situation until the Committee has declared them open for use.
18) OFFICIAL RESULT OF A GAME: The Committee will determine when to suspend or call the Game. 7 out of 12 Flags in a Game must be decided for the result of a Game to be official.
19) WEATHER PRECAUTION: In the event of severe weather the Committee reserves the right to reduce the number of holes in the Stipulated Round for each Flag.
20) DETERMINING THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: The teams participating in the Championship Game will be determined by the team’s overall record in each division. In the event of a tie with the overall record the winner of the teams head-to-head Game will be used; if still tied most points won; if still tied the total number of holes won in head-to-head Match; if still tied total # of overall holes won.
21) CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY-OFF PROCEDURE: In the event that the Championship Game is halved the team Coach/Captain will pick two players to represent their team and will begin a one-hole play-off on the 9th hole to determine the Champion. If no Champion is determined after the play-off hole, those players will then proceed to a chip-off on the 9th putting green, with the lowest cumulative distance determining the Champion.
